Meet the Maker
“I really like gin.
So I made my own really amazing gin.
That’s the honest truth, but there’s a way longer
story to this tale, so here goes.
Salacia is an Old Tom style craft gin created by Sasha Naidoo - fashion design graduate turned cake artist, collector and connoisseur of gin and now, Durban's first female gin maker.
Her interest in alcohol started when she was too young to drink - apparently it was the beautifully designed bottles and packaging that intrigued her. We think it was more the allure of the illicit.
Over time, the complex flavours of perfectly served cocktails perked her palate - she was the one always ordering the most unusual drinks wherever she went.
Fast forward a few years and the opportunity to create her very own gin became a reality, right from inception by carefully selecting a few of her favourite ingredients to craft this small batch gin.
Salacia combines fresh pineapple, lime zest and green apple skins together with a blend of juniper berries and exotic spices, which are then cold triple distilled, to produce a uniquely flavoured Old Tom style gin.
Named after the Roman goddess of the sea, Salacia - derived from the Latin sal, meaning salt - denotes the wide open sea and is literally translated to mean ‘sensational’.
Best enjoyed as a classic G&T with a twist of lime rind, or as a sipping gin on the rocks, Salacia is the culmination of a lifelong dream of a Durban girl with the sea breeze in her hair and sand between her toes.
We hope you love it just as much as Sasha did creating it.
